GLOBAL ORIENTAL

Global Oriental offers a unique focus on Japan, the main subject areas being Memoir and Biography, Religion, Travel, Popular Culture, History, Literature and Business. The imprint was launched in 1996 with The Silver Drum  - the acclaimed memoir by Princess Chichibu, sister-in-law to Emperor Hirohito and the first member of the Japanese Imperial Family to lift the veil on court etiquette as well as her own life and times. More recently (1999),  Rediscovering Basho marked the 300th anniversary of the great poet’s death, and brought together some of the world’s top haiku specialists exploring many aspects of the work of the ‘master’. In spring 2000 key titles include The Mysterious Power of Ki (the history and practice of ki in Japanese culture) and Rediscovering Natsume Soseki, one of Japan’s great early-twentieth century authors, which includes a first-ever translation in English of his ‘Travels in Manchuria and Korea’.
